my LUNAR NEW YEAR 2006
Saturday, February 11, 2006

Lunar New year...ok, im slow to update abt what i did for boring chinese new year in a western country... It takes time to consolidate pictures from everybody then groupin it. And there's always things that i wanna blog abt so the entry for lunar new juz dragged.

Wanted to do a steamboat on the first day of new year but due to the bad weather(raining), we couldnt get down to the Sobey's(huge supermarket) to get our groceries and so we intend to postpone it. Visited this restaurant at the University Plaza called "CHINA LEGEND". It looks like a typical chinese restaurant but the menu is set like a western-style. It goes like appetizer (dumpling, soup, spring roll etc), entree (lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork etc) and rice/noodle (shanghai noodle, szechuan noodle, fried rice etc). So we ordered a meal for 3 for the 5of us as the serving is really big. That's the first time i had decent rice after so long. It's always pita, pasta, pizza and burgers... oh, We tried to "lao yu sheng" with the noodle(real purpose to mix the sauce to the dish). lame...Overall, the food was fantastic. As saranya always says, despite how full you are after a meal, there is always another department in your system to have dessert. So we end of our Lunar New Year feast with ice cream at TCBY (The country's best yoghurt). mmm.. yummy!!!
Sometimes, the school try very hard to bring in the festive mood. So they lined up food stalls selling asian cuisine at the Student learning centre (it's just like the central forum back in NUS). They have bubble tea, sweet and sour port wif rice, orikini, dumpling, tea egg etc. nah.. the food is bad... But still, Village 1(where joo and sara are stayin) was serving chinse new year feast tt nite. The food there is wayyyy better. Delicious spring roll and shanghai noodle. Check out the peking duck in the middle. It's just a duck-drumstick. i didnt know it's served like that and was still searching for the peking duck wrap.

Since i was the one who suggested steamboat earlier bcos i was cravin for it, i took the task of gettin groceries. Anyway, i love grocery-shopping. Wif joo's company, we Took a 30mins walk to WHOLESALE (supermkt which sells cheap stuff if we buy in bulk). Not knowing the limit of our strength, we keep throwing things in the trolley while claiming "wah.. so cheap.. since it's a long walk.. juz take. really cheap". We shop for abt 2.5-3hrs. Oh, this supermkt is environmental-friendly. Knowing that they don't provide carriers except for some used boxes, we 'stole' plastic bags from school. haha. Anyway, each of us gotta carry 3heavy bags(approx. 2kg). And tt means, i can't put my hands in the pocket in the freezing weather. Within 5mins, the hands are numb and we hafta stop for a break. As much as we hope to hitch a ride, but we didnt bcos we find it too pathetic and embarrassing to do so. The journey back was 1 hr despite us taking a bus bcos walking to the bus stop which is 200m away, is not an easy task wif our heavy load.

The day has come when the gals came over my house for steamboat. i spent 1.5 hrs in the mornin to clean up the house and wash up the dirty dishes which my housemates left behind.they always accumulate the used cutleries till they have no more clean ones to use. Yucks! But still, im juz gonna clean it for this one time man! i made the gals walk all the way from sch to my house and they were surprised tt i actually walk to sch everyday. Didnt realize that we actually bought so much food until we took them all out and lay them nicely on the table.

Menu for the day:
1) chicken (spicy or 'rojak'-seasoning)
2) mixed seafood (cos it's cheaper to get that compared to proper unshelled prawns)
3)banana milkshake
4)2kinds of soup (chicken + ikan bilis or szechuan)
5)sausage
6) pasta (bcos we couldnt find beehoon)
7) minced pork (hope to roll it into meat balls since we can't find fish balls)
8)crab stick
9)nuggets
10) brownies
11) mushroom, bean sprout, cabbage and spinach
12)eggs
13) cod fish

ok, all these food but juz 6ppl eating... gross! haha. but i still enjoy it.

All we need was just some chinese new year songs... then it'll b a perfect for me to imagine that im back in singapore. Oh, and a mahjong session would be nice. haha. . .

The food was just too much and consider that some of them gotta leave earlier.. it's down to 3 ppl finishing the rest. I did offer some of the 'leftovers' to my housemates but perhaps it's too oriental so they didnt eat alot. think they prefer their potatoes, cheese and pasta.

So what's the result of being greedy and grab so much food? What's the cause of inexperience in steamboat?
(*check out the picture to findout*)
