How is it going?

i have been in Canada for about a month. One thing that i have to get used is their greeting message. The canadians have the habit of greeting their friends, acquaintance or just anybody whom they come across with the phrase "how is it going?" When i was first greeted with this, i felt quite embarrased of not knowing how to answer. <<What is it that he/she is referring to? How would you know what i was dealing with juz now that you are so keen to know how is it going?>> haha.. but luckily, a simple reply 'fine, thank you!' can never go wrong.
Since the gals and i will be staying here for another 4months, we ought to know the model answer to this greeting and as silly as it can be... we consulted some of our friends who are canadians. Then we know that the phrase just simply means "how are you?" and a reply of "im good. Thank you! how abt you?" will be sufficient.
BUT we were always making fun of that greetin statement. Such as there was once when saranya was greeted by that sentence and she replied with a 'hi'. that was damn hilarious because it doesnt sound like she's answering the question.
Another scenario was when joo and dap were making stupid conversation which goes like this...
Dap: How is it going?
Joo: Im going fine. Thank you
Dap: Where is fine?
(Apparently, Daphne trying to act bimbotic and treated 'fine' as a place)
We practised 'hard' so that the next time we could answer it naturally when somebody ask though it still doesnt make much sense to me. Frankly speaking, it's juz a habit to greet that way and if you were to really anwer them "well, im pretty good but this mornin, i was at ..blah blah blah"... THEY SIMPLY DON'T CARE. heehee. So that's why i say, that statement is quite meaningless.
